Ga Ga for Guangzhou!

We love Guangzhou! Shamian Island is such a quaint little place tucked between the shores of the Pearl River. It has old ties to the British throne and therefore the architecture is neo-classical, not chinese. We got up this morning and took Lily to her medical exam, which she passed with flying colors. The doctor asked me to sign a form and Lily dazzled him with her remarkable penmanship when she insisted on affixing her signature to the form in chinese! The weather is lovely...in the 60's with a nice breeze. We ate lunch at a little joint called Lucy's, which is popular with adopting families. What I loved was being able to sit outside in the sun! (Can't do that at home...it's snowing! Thanks for the weather report, Stephanie!) I do have to admit that I'm starting to miss iced tea, salad and milk. We've been fairly careful with what we've eaten and so far our strategy has paid off...knock on wood. Tonight we're having Papa John's so we'll let you know.

Lily's first plane ride went well...she was a little irritated that I insisted she wear her seat belt so she should be real fun when I strap her into a car seat! We were served an authentic chinese box lunch on the plane, which Lily devoured. (The rest of us only picked at it.) Her favorite part was the little packet of hot pepper relish. Mom, you would have loved it! We had to hide our packets from her because I wasn't entirely sure what it was. She made the universal sign for "I've got to pee" so she and I made our way to the back of the plane. She went potty and proceeded to touch every surface in the bathroom including the toilet! I told our guide to tell her how gross that is and she told her she never touched the toilet...hmmmm. She finally fell asleep about two minutes before we landed!

We are staying at the Victory Hotel here in Guangzhou. We are in a Japanese suite, which means the bed is on the floor...a big hit with both girls. Pete took the girls to the park while I did paper work with our guide, Helen. She informed me that she got a phone call from the US Consulate and they have not recieved our updated approval from the INS yet. Imagine that! She took one of our copies of the approval and will drop it off tomorrow so we'll see if that is sufficient enough for the US government.

Pete bought each of the girls a slightly creepy looking chinese doll with a little baby on her back...Sophie is lovingly mothering hers and Lily is absolutely beating the trash out of hers. I wonder what that means.....

Only two more days until we fly the (un)friendly skies on Northwest Airlines. Hopefully my seating stategy will work and we'll have a whole row of seats to ourselves. Otherwise, I feel really sorry for the poor sucker crazy enough to put himself between us and the chinese tasmanian devil!!!

NO! Tell me it isn't so. So what happens if the Consulate decides that your copy of the INS approval isn't good enough? I can't say I am surprised but I am nonetheless infuriated with the bureaucracy. As I said before, you have the makings of an excellent screenplay!

I'm glad to hear the Lily has developed a culinary appreciation for "what's hot" and "what's not" (pun intended). Hope she doesn't put me to shame.

Anxious for your return. Be safe and God Speed.

We all need to write and call our state people!!! I think I am going to send an email right after I get off here.

I hope your copy works.

To much paperwork!!!! It does not suprise me paperwork is missing. But even with all paperwork trouble it's all worth it. Very soon Lily will be officialy yours. What wonderful news to hear that Lily passed her medical exam with flying colors. The Victory Hotel looks really nice. Sophie that is a great picture of you with the frog. I have not forgotten about picking up Grandma Leigh at the airport. We get more excited about you return home as each day passes. Lily already has tons of friends. I will pray the paperwork comes through and there are no delays.

Love and Blessings
Stephanie

Hey guys,it's Sarah. Grandma you are so funny but I agree with you about the bureaucracy. I'm glad you guys are having a great time. I think having the beds on the floor in the Japanese suite is funny since most of the Japanese actually have real beds now. One thing you're going to have to get used to now is having two different personalities in the house, like with the dolls. Oh, I can't wait to meet Lily! She looked so cute. Sophie was absolutely adorable next to the giant frog but what was the three fingers for.
I'm sending all my love and any of my luck your way. Hugs and kisses,
Sarah

HI. Sorry I have not written. Katie would LOVE that frog. I still think a frog for Sophie, like Mrs. Frog would be neat. It was our best pet until we got Kitty (horse not cat). I have pruchased a new car. I couldn't take the van any longer. 3 sets of brakes and 2 a/c units with several leaks in 2 1/2 years is quite enough. I went back to my trusty Volvo. I checked out the Victory hotel when I got your letter. It seem very nice. If there is anything we can do for you regarding the INS like that reccomendation we never had to do, let us know. Hey, Kaley has a job? How old is she? I told Emily to get a job. She is resisting. Off to dinner, I will write more later.

Deb,
You mean that the little angel sleeping in the airline seat is a Chinese Tasmanian devel? Impossible, you must be mistaken. Anyway, it sounds like you all are getting close to returning home. It's good to get home even after the best of trips. Gail and I are looking forward to meeting Lily abd seeing Sophie. I hope she took good notes for all her stories. We are looking forward for the pictures each day. There are lots of folks at work that look for them as well. Gail tried to locate a childs story book at China, but had no luck, well we still have a week or so before we leave. Thanks from all of your stories and pictures. Hug the girls for me.
See you soon.

Oh I'm laughing about the doll! Emily beats hers to death. I don't think she likes dolls. She was with boys in all the photos I got from HH so she must be a Tom boy!! Hates bows too!

Well relax now, it's almost done!! Enjoy! This is the good part of the trip!!!

Deb. I sent Senator Alexander an email yesterday. Just that he should look into the inconsistency of INS regarding paperwork on adoptions from China. I hope you are packing and getting ready to head home. It is still snowing and freezing.

I was hoping to see one more post before I go but I guess I'll have to wait. I am outa here soon so I'll check again tonight or tomorrow.

What a day you have had. I'm not sure if your luck turned on Allison's email or my heavely request, but I'm believing I held just a little more sway.

Thought you would get a kick out of your horoscope in today's Orlando Sentinel, and I quote:
"Today is a 7. You're much stronger now, after all you've just been through. Be gentle with a doofus who makes a critical remark. You may not know your own strength". Pretty fitting I'd say. Hang in there; it's almost over!

Well gang of mine thanks for the memories. Its been great traveling with you. See you at the finish line. I'll be the one wearing the big smile. Know that you are loved.

HI Guys, your last day...Hope all went well with the INS.
Emily said Lily looks to cute to be a TD. Did the guide tell her she that her next airplane ride would be 24 hours? Bill said to drink early and often. I say you should ask the local docotr for some Xanex. There is always Benadryl.
I have a new punishment for Katie, so far it works great. She loses "Kitty" visits. Emily said it was worse than no TV. That's big for Emily since she is addicted to TV. It's cold here also 40's at night and it 68 today but very sunny. SORRY Anyway... have a great flight home, have fun :)
We will call when you get home, but we'll let you settle in and sleep before we call, say 15, 20 minutes (kidding)
All our love and best wished...
Chris, Bill, Emily & Katie
